2020-21 season cancelled
The WOAA has officially cancelled the 2020-2021 senior hockey season. The decision was made following an annual general meeting of the league on September 24.

Board member Dave Black said with the likelihood of limited or no fans due to COVID-19 and the costs of running a season, the teams all felt this was a difficult but necessary step.

“Their own boards that they have, their volunteers, the players that they all have to look after, really at the end of the day the biggest thing was ensuring everyone’s personal safety.”

But Black said that doesn’t mean the league won’t be working hard to hopefully return in 2021-2022.

“The league and teams will be meeting over this season discussing other ways to help move the league forward again. Each year, we always move forward. But it is extremely difficult to not be playing for the first time in our league’s history.”

The WOAA has been around for over 75 years, with senior hockey beginning play in the 1948-1949 season. This will be the first time in the league’s 72-year history that a season will not go ahead. Black also thanked the fans, volunteers, players and officials that have helped make the league great and will hopefully help the league return stronger than ever in 2021-20.
